Answer:
The PaperScan app can be used on all of the latest iPads that have a builtin camera with focussing feature. According to this it is not possible to use the app on a 1st generation iPad, because it did not have a camera bult in. Additionally it is not possible to use automatic camera release on an iPad 2, because its camera had a fixed focus. Newer iPad generations can be used without such limitations.
