Question:
Which fulltext search options are available?
Answer:
To search for matching documents via Fulltext, you can use the Fulltext field in your search dialog. There are various search possibilities which are explained in this article. Additionally, Fulltext can be combined with other index fields to limit the search results further.
Single Word Search:
Search for single words in documents or index data. The search criteria must be entered in the Fulltext field.
Example: search for phone
Various Words:
Search for several terms that are on various positions/pages of a document. A document has to contain several search terms, but where exactly on the document is not important. The search terms can be on the document or in index data. In this case, just type the different search terms in the Fulltext field, separated by a blank. Example: Search for phone and Flying in one document
Phrase Search:
Search for phrases in a document. Only documents are found which contain the exact phrase. Phrase Search must be enclosed by "". Example: "Oktoberfest 2010 fairground in Munich"
Boolean Operator Search:
Another possibility is the use of boolean operators. These can be used in front of the search term each. The boolean operators have to be entered with capital letters like AND, OR, NOT.
Examples:
AND - search: You want to search only for documents that contain the words Peters and Steel. (search term: peters AND steel)
OR - search: You want to search for documents that contain the words Peters or Steel. (search term: peters OR steel)
NOT - search: You want to search for documents that contain the words Peters but not Steel. (search term: peters NOT steel)
Approximative Search:
A user can search for 2 words standing near each other. The words are defined within "", followed by~ and the maximum word distance. For example, to find documents containing purchase and roller, but the two words having a distance of at most 5, the user enters "purchase roller"~5.
Place holder / Wildcard Search:
If the exact spelling of a search term is not known you can replace single characters by ? and several characters by using *.
One character, in this example, the y from Flying replaced by ? Several characters, in this example yin from Flying replaced by * .
Display of search results:
After searching a result list of matching documents is shown. When opening one of those documents in the viewer, automatically, all Fulltext search terms are marked in terms of color. The first match found on the document is marked with red color, all other matches yellow. If the search terms cannot be found on the document but in index data only you will receive a message that no match was found on the document.
