Behavior:
When attempting to open a document from Windows Explorer Client, I'm prompted to choose an application to open the file with. It eventually times out then throws the following error message;
Document cannot be opened for editing. Changes will not be saved in DocuWare.
Possible reasons:
-file type is not supported
-file with same name is already opened in the application
If you click on an application, it will report that the file is corrupt or can't be found.
Solution:
To resolve this issue, please try the following,
First, check if a default application has been set for the document type you are trying to open.
How to set a default application
Once a default application has been set, attempt to open the document to see if the issue persists.
If the issue persists or if a default application has already been set, then the following can be done to determine whether there's an issue with the document itself.
- Before opening a document, from the file explorer, go to %temp%\Edit
- Open a document from Windows Explorer Client, a temporary folder and a temporary copy of the document will be downloaded in this location.
- Open the temporary folder, then check the document that was downloaded.
- The document will most likely be without an extension. If you wait long enough, a timeout will occur if you don't choose an application resulting in the temporary file and folder being deleted.
NOTE: The deletion of the temporary files is the reason why an error will be thrown that the file is corrupt or can't be found when you try opening it after the timeout has been reached.
When this happens, the issue is that when the document was first processed into the system, it was missing an extension. DocuWare will attempt to download a temporary copy without an extension, which will then result in the system not knowing which application to open it with.
The document would need to be reprocessed into the system while ensuring that there's an extension.
A workaround that can be done would be to open the document, right click then select "Open with". From here, choose the application you wish to open it with. This approach will prevent a timeout from occurring, allowing you enough time to choose an application.
