Question:
How can you install Smart Connect in Terminal Server Environments?

Answer:
*NOTE: There is no need to install DocuWare Smart Connect from Web Client --> My DocuWare, because it will not work in Terminal Server environment. You could try installing it from the traditional location, but just for testing purpose.

To be able to use Smart Connect in Terminal Server environments, you must install the Smart Connect Dispatcher:

  1. You need to connect to Terminal Server in a console mode or installation mode.
  2. Install SmartConnectDispatcherSetup.msi. It will install "DocuWare Smart Connect Dispatcher" in Windows services. After you finish installing you may want change the services to start automatically. This file is usually provided in a directory called "Smart Connect for Terminal Server", that comes with DocuWare 5.1c SP2 software.

  3. Create a directory called SmartConnectBin in C:\Program Files\DocuWare or in any other location where  ALL terminal server users will have full access to the directory.
  4. Extract SmartConnectBin.zip to the directory created in previous step. This file is usually provided in a directory called "Smart Connect for Terminal Server" that comes with DocuWare 5.1c SP2 software.
  5. Create a file called smartconnect-setup-location.ini in the same place where the content of the SmartConnectBin.zip was extracted.

  6. Configure smartconnect-setup-location.ini with the following configuration, which contains one single line with the URL of the Smart Connect setup, i.e.
    Sample syntax:  http://dwwebclient.yourserver.com/WebClient/DocuWare/Services/Config.ashx?Target=SmartConnect
    Smart Connect
  7. To start Smart Connect, try running DocuWare.SmartConnectClient.exe from SmartConnectBin (in my example). To make easy for every terminal user you may want to create a shortcut in Windows Programs group so that every user can execute DocuWare.SmartConnectClient.exe.
  8. After you execute DocuWare.SmartConnectClient.exe you will see a Smart Connect icon in the system tray but it will not be connected until you enter the user name and password of DocuWare.
    Smart Connect
Rights click on the icon and select Show Smart Connect Settings and enter the DocuWare user name and password or windows authentication.

Troubleshooting:

  • In Windows 2003, if you extract the content of the zip file, the entire content gets extracted with protected privileges. You have to remove those privileges from all files and files with sub-folders before running the executable, else it will not connect.
  • Changing the server environment to install mode: Installing DocuWare in Terminal Services/Citrix.
  • There is a !Readme.txt file that is included in the package.
  • If the Terminal Server is in a different machine. then you may want to run "DocuWare Smart Connect Dispatcher" services under a domain server account.
  • Do not install in a traditional format (Web Client --> My DocuWare --> Smart Connect). Smart Connect is running with a windows service not via Click Once application (traditionally).
  • If you are getting an error message, that the socket or port is already been used then try stopping all Smart Connect clients and restart the Dispatcher server.
  • If one of the Smart Connect runs before the dispatcher, then the port may get blocked, therefore, blocking the ports to other Smart Connect clients.

Further notice:

It may happens, that the Smart Connect client (which is always started from the .exe file in the folder SmartConnectBin) does not have the correct URLs in the section "Automatic Configuration". To fix this, the link in the smart-connect-setup-location.ini has to be opened in the browser. Now the "website" has to be saved as "smartconnect-bootstrap.xml" by using "Save As ...". This file must be stored in the SmartConnectBin folder as well.

As soon as you log in, the following error appears:

Logging failed with the following error message:
"Insufficient permissions for setting the configuration section" default proxy ",
Click here to get the Smart Connect settings.

If this error is appearing, the following Windows-Hotfix has to be installed on the Terminal server: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2580188.

Further informations for downloading the Hotfix:

  • If the Hotfix is required for a 32bit system, the link has to be opened with a computer, that is using a 32bit system.
  • For the installation of the Hotfix, there are no special things to take care of. After the installation the Terminal server has to be restarted.
