How to use special characters in a .dwcontrol metadata ?

I want to use the DW Import and fill in the index entries using a .dwcontrol metadata. But why are special characters not processed correctly?

Special characters have to be formatted in valid XML format. The correct format of the special character can be created with this tool for example:
http://www.freeformatter.com/xml-escape.html#ad-output

It is possible that characters are recognized correctly without formatting them, but that does not mean, that this will work every time. It is recommended to format every character in valid XML.
