Moving a system

I have to move a 7.1 system from one machine to another. In the past it would be ; install database, restore from old, install auth server with replace, make adjustments, install remaining servers with replace.

With 7.1 the install only allows for Front end, back end and full text server installation.

What is the work-around or is there a new document?

Phil Robson published an article on this forum on how to move DW7 system. I posted a copy of the article at the link above.

Thank you for that info Josef. But, my situation is a little different. The old machine suffered a hard drive crash, so the DW system cannot run. All I have of the old machine is a backup of the database.

I installed only the front end services on the new machine which includes the auth server. I was planning on restoring the old database then running the installer for the back end and hoping that the new installer would have the same replace options as the version 6 one did. Not sure if it will work but I may give it a try.

Follow my guide to the letter where appropriate and you should be good to go. 7 will not make pretty prompts on replacing services, it will just do it. The important thing to remember is that you cannot 'cherry pick' what to install with 7 therefore follow the guide.

Reading your post over brings me to a favorite subject. That is backups. I have to question, how and why, a production server does not have sufficient backup in order to restore it? Sure the database backup is critical, but where is the 'system state' backup?
A Windows System State backup will allow the restore of the entire operating system and programs on a new machine.

There really is no excuse for any company in 2019 not to have proper backups of everything, and I mean everything.
