NOTE: Microsoft recommends verifying the repository before attempting a repair. More information can be found here: winmgmt
- Open Command Prompt as administrator.
- Run:
winmgmt /verifyrepository - If the result states that the repository is consistent, do not reset it. Restart Windows and retry the Desktop Apps installation. If the repository is inconsistent, run the following command in Command Prompt:
winmgmt /salvagerepository
The /salvagerepository command checks the repository for consistency, and when corruption is detected, rebuilds it while attempting to merge readable content from the existing repository.
As a final troubleshooting step, run the command:
winmgmt /resetrepository
The /resetrepository command should be reserved as a final troubleshooting step when:
- The repository has been confirmed to be inconsistent.
- The salvage operation did not resolve the issue.
- The user understands that the reset may affect installed applications or WMI providers.
- A system backup or VM snapshot has been created.
